Collins Paint Formulas

I have several requests for information on paint formulas and availability of paint for S-Line and A-Line units.  While some aerosol cans are available from some vendors, these tend to be less than satisfactory due to inability to adjust spray size etc.  I personally use a good quality air brush for most touch-up work and a small sprayer for larger work.  While paint can be matched by many paint vendors, the following will allow you to get the proper finish without attempts at matching etc.  Some of these formulas were previously published in the now extinct Collins Collectors Magazine but have had some modification here mostly in the base used.

S-Line

All paint is Pittsburg Paint

#126  Trim Ring

      Interior Exterior Gloss Oil Enamel

      Pastel Mixing base 54-410

      Tint  B-10, C-12  for 1 quart.

#180 Case

       Interior Exterior Gloss Oil Enamel

       Midtone Mixing base  54-150

       Tint B-34, C-12 for 1 quart

Front Panel

       Same base and #126

       Tint B-11, C-4 for 1 quart.

A-Line

 Paint is Pratt & Lambert

This paint is available only from factory and in gallons only.  The paint is black crinkle and must be tinted up to St. James Gray.

Base paint is Pratt & Lambert #591-516 Air Dry Enamel Wrinkle Finish.  Pratt & Lambert Industrial Paint Div can be reached at 1-800-835-2854.

Tinted using industrial tint

       5Y, 4W per gallon

My results with this paint indicate that it is not quite as “green” in appearance as some of the original paint finishes I have seen but appears to match other units quite well.  I’m not sure if the “green” is from environmental exposure or was the in original color.
